Have you found yourself asking if professional hair and makeup service is a “must have” for a boudoir photography session, or is it just a luxury?Well here is the straight talk.
All reputable Boudoir Photographers offer an option for makeup and hair artists to doll you up before your photo session. In fact, some require that you have a seat in the makeup chair before the shooting begins. There is good reason for this, and it has to do with your overall satisfaction from your boudoir photography session.
Some boudoir photographers do the hair and makeup themselves. I don’t recommend going this route. What are the chances someone is excellent at both makeup and photography? Slim to none. In many cases this is just the photographer cutting corners. A bad makeup job can ruin a photoshoot. Best to let the professionals handle it.
First of all, as photographers, we have established relationships with makeup artists that we trust. These artists understand what we do and what we need from them. It is imperative that the makeup artist understands how makeup for photography differs from everyday makeup.
From the right colors to the perfect false eyelashes, Boudoir photography makeup professionals are your best friend (aside from your photographer). If you are not accustomed to wearing makeup, it might be a bit of a shock to your system. Often it seems very heavy. Never fear, typically the camera reduces about 30% of what you see. What might appear over done in the mirror ends up looking perfect in the final pictures. It is a good rule of thumb to trust the professionals and let them do their work.
When booking your boudoir session, make sure a makeup artist is available for you. There is typically an additional charge, but it is well worth it. Not only will you look your best, but the confidence boost given to you from the hair and makeup in itself will shine through in the photographs.
When you think of Boudoir Photography do you think of extreme amounts of lace and frills? Maybe so. But Boudoir Photography can be so much more! Many of my clients feel awkward in such attire. At home you are more likely to find them in cotton bottoms and a t shirt. So why not show that off in a boudoir photo session?
The “casual look” is not only sexy, but can be a great first outfit to wear during your boudoir photoshoot. Chances are, you will be a bit nervous when first in front of the camera. For this reason, I love for my clients to start in perhaps their favorite comfortable tee. Before they know it, they forget that they are even posing as we begin to shoot and laugh.
But is the casual look for boudoir photography very sexy? Hell yes it is.
Believe me, men find a woman relaxed and in cotton as sexy as in lace, if not more so. This is a great look to begin your session as it tends to put you in a comfort zone right off the bat. Being in front of a camera can be a daunting experience to be sure, this is a way to ease yourself into it. From pajama bottoms to his favorite sports team tshirt, it all works if photographed in the correct tone. You would be hard pressed to find any casual attire that I could not make work in a boudoir photoshoot.
So when you are packing your bag for your boudoir photography session, don’t forget the comfy clothes. Adding a real variety to your session will only enhance the experience and in turn your photographs will be that much better.
One of the biggest questions I get from my boudoir photography clients is “What can I do to prepare? Is there anything I need to know?”
Well, yes, there is a lot you need to know, but luckily it is all straight forward and easy to understand. Its really all not that involved, but there are a few things to take note of.
Be sure to stay hydrated. This will give you the best looking skin on camera. Also, feel free to bring bottled water to your shoot to stay hydrated. You may be doing some boudoir photography poses that work up a thirst!
Decide on the tone you would like. Bring in examples you enjoy and would like inspiration from. Many clients use pintrest for this. It is probably a good idea to pin your favorite photos to go over with your photographer, perhaps while your hair and makeup are getting done.
If using our makeup/hair service, be sure to arrive with clean hair and clean face, she will handle the rest. Feel free to bring any makeup you prefer espescially if you have allergies or other special needs.
Wear loose clothing to your boudoir photography shoot! This is so very important. If you wear jeans to your shoot the seams will make an impression on your skin. These marks can take up to an hour to go away completely. So leave the jeans or other tight clothing at home. Warm up pants and a tshirt are best!
Do not starve yourself. A day’s worth of starvation will make little to no difference on camera. I would much rather have you happy and energetic. The lighting will do the rest. 😉
If you are waxing, give yourself couple of days for irritation to go away. No one likes red bumps in photos.
Take a deep breath, and enjoy! Remember that you are in the hands of a professional and ultimately it is their responsibility for you to have a tremendous shoot. All you have to do is be yourself and the great photos will come naturally.
So you are ready for a Boudoir Photography session, but who should you hire to conduct the shoot?
There are many Boudoir Photographers across the US and chances are one is located near you. A quick Google search will surely give you a list of available photographers who would want your business.
When browsing web pages, it is important to notice the consistency and quality of the photographer’s work. Is there a variety? Do their images look as if they belong in a magazine. Do they have reviews? Can they provide images that will be pleasing to both yourself and your boyfriend or husband? Do they offer any advice on preparation and wardrobe? These are just some of the important questions you should ask yourself when considering a Boudoir Photographer.
Above all else, make sure the photographer has a style that you think fits the purpose of your photo shoot.
